On Sunday, five suspects linked to the murder of two cops were killed in a shootout with police in Hammarsdale, west of Durban.

On Monday, in the north of Durban, a trio from a notorious gang wanted for a series of murders was shot dead in Amaoti.

The ministry’s spokesperson, Kamogelo Mogotsi, has condemned the incidents.

" We will not allow our communities to be terrorised by criminals. It is clear to us that criminals are determined to pose more threats to communities and declare themselves enemies to all of us, and we will intensify our fight against them.

"In the past, we have made strong statements that anyone who attempts to attack police is actually attacking the state and will face dire consequences."

Sibusiso Ngcongo, a ward councillor in Hammarsdale, says the community is on edge.

" The situation in our ward is not good. People get killed, not so long ago, on Thursday, there was an incident in an area close to where the incidents took place. They broke into, and happened to shoot an old man, in the house, who was killed. There are multiple incidents of this nature."

He's appealed to the community to work with police in their efforts to clamp down on crime.

"The police can't do the job on their own, they need. Those who are nearby those criminals must be able to assist the police in terms of sharing information."
