KZN Transport loses R4.6 bn to failing contractors

The Department of Transport in KZN says contractors who fail to deliver on their promises have cost the department a whopping R4.6 billion.

MEC Siboniso Duma says 30 contractors in the province have defaulted on their allocated projects - two have already been suspended.
He says they found that some companies that were awarded tenders had no record of being registered or were previously suspended.
The MEC says they're developing a tracking tool to monitor the rollout of all departmental projects, adding that contractors who fail to meet the revised timelines will be fired.

He was speaking at a media briefing on Tuesday.
" The scale of the backlog of all infrastructure while has to take pipeline because it is failing the department dismally. The department has a total of 944 active construction."
