Hawks nab 88 in KZN crime crackdown

KwaZulu-Natal is among the top three provinces where suspects linked to serious organised crimes were nabbed in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya says 88 of the 656 arrests were made in the province.

Gauteng recorded the highest number with 139, followed by the North West with 99.

"During these arrests, 395 firearms and 1,746 rounds of ammunition were seized. During the same period, the Directorate secured 239 convictions on accused persons."

On Thursday, Lebeya delivered the results of high-profile cases for the 4th Quarter of the 2024/25 financial year.

He said out of 253 people sentenced, 55% were South Africans, while 45% were foreign nationals.

Lebeya said freezing and forfeiture orders totalling over R418 million were issued to seize assets linked to criminal activity.

"An amount of R19,104 490 million has been deposited into the criminal assets recovery accounts. This performance makes the total recorded successes of arrests, convictions and attachment of assets 1,024."
