Govt to cut CWP contracts for over 60s

The Department of Cooperative Governance says it will move forward with plans to terminate the contracts of people aged 60 and over under its Community Work Programme.

The department's revealed an over expenditure of more than R100 million in the CWP in the 2024/25 financial year.
"The contracts that we have issued to our participants have resulted in over expenditure. The budget expenditure is 31 March has been recorded to be R175 and R135 million, which means that we're 5.5% over what was allocated to us," says Chief Financial Officer, Pankie Matomela.

Matomela told Parliament that KZN has 7,533 participants aged 60 and over in the programme.
He said discussions have already been underway with the affected individuals.
" We were scheduled to have a discussion within the department to consider their different submissions as a result of the consultation we undertook. We have already had discussions with them in certain provinces.”
