Durbanites feel pinch as food prices rise
Updated | By Celumusa Zulu
While some Durban residents agree with a recent food price index
that the cost of groceries has risen sharply, others feel most items have
remained relatively affordable.

The household affordability index found that the average cost of a household food basket increased by more than R90, between March and April.
It noted steep price hikes in Durban particularly.
One resident told Newswatch she is now spending more on her monthly groceries.
"The price of food is really skyrocketing. Eggs, meat, especially with red meat, Beef and also with chicken. The price of chicken, a kilo has gone up," she said.

"I usually do shop in about three stores, and I get different items from each store. So, I have compared the prices."
However, one other shopper felt that most items have remained affordable, except for the price of beef.
"The price of rice was R199, which is practically R200, but I can get it for R150 at the moment. The same with cooking oil, it's gone down from what it was some time ago.
"However, I stay away from beef because it is expensive, so I just go for chicken."
