Durban man to appear in court for defrauding SARS
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
A Durban man accused of defrauding the South African Revenue Service out of more than R1 million is expected in court next month.

The 58-year-old suspect, who is the sole director of a company, allegedly submitted a VAT return using documents from a return that was refunded for the 2018/2019 period.
The KZN Hawk's Simphiwe Mhlongo said when the Revenue Service conducted an audit, they found that the invoices, bank statements and working schedule were fraudulent.

"As a result, the VAT refund claimed was false, and SARS suffered the actual prejudice of R 1 157 099.65.
"A case of fraud was reported at Point Police Station, and the case docket was allocated to Hawks members for further investigation. Hence, the suspect was served yesterday. He is expected to appear in Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court on 11 June 2024. "
