‘Chaos’ following truck crash on M4 near Merebank

Emergency services were working on Wednesday afternoon to free a driver trapped in the wreckage of a truck that collided with a vehicle on the M4 near Merebank, south of Durban.

The heavy-duty truck overturned, lost its load, and landed on its roof, blocking the southern part of the freeway.

 

The roadway was closed while authorities worked to extricate the man.

 

"Paramedics arrived on the scene to find chaos as they found a truck lying on its roof with the driver severely entrapped. Immediately, the eThekwini Fire Department and Redline Rescue were dispatched to assist," says ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson.

"Whilst rescuers worked to cut the patient free, Advanced Life Support Paramedics stabilised the man. Once freed, the driver was extricated and placed into an awaiting ambulance, where he was transported to the Ahmed Al-Kadi Private Hospital for further care. 

 

"Two occupants from the second vehicle had sustained moderate injuries and were stabilised on the scene by Advanced Life Support Paramedics before being transported to a nearby hospital for further care. The M4 Southern Freeway has been closed at the Merebank offramp and will be for some time to allow recovery to take place."
