ANC wins Midlands by-election, eyes 2026 polls

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal says it is drawing
strength from a Midlands by-election win, as it works to regain ground ahead of
next year's local government elections.

This week, the party retained Ward 4 in the Mpofana Local Municipality, securing 1,436 votes, making Makhosazane Bhengu the new ward councillor.
The ANC beat the IFP, which received 712 votes, while the MK Party came in third with 635.
The by-election was held following the death of the previous ANC councillor, France Malevu, who passed away after a long illness.
The win is a boost for the party, which has recently suffered setbacks in key by-elections, losing wards in Mandeni, eThekwini, and Richmond to the MK Party.

However, provincial spokesperson Fanle Sibisi said this latest win marks a step in the right direction and lays a strong foundation for the ANC’s renewal.
"Retaining this word is not just a political win, but a profound endorsement of the ANC's commitment to service delivery.
"This outcome serves as a strong foundation for the ongoing weakening of our structures to better serve communities. We're proud that the ANC campaign is the main peaceful, people-centred and focused on the real issues affecting our communities."
