Students talk about Howard College protest
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Some students from UKZN's Howard College have described the chaotic scenes that unfolded on the campus earlier during a protest.
Cleaning staff are demanding an end to outsourcing as well as a minimum R10 000 basic salary.
Police and extra personnel had to be called in to calm the situation down when they went on the rampage.
This student says she was waiting for her lift at the main entrance when the protest got out of control.
"I couldn't wait in the front because the police said we had to walk further down to avoid teargas. They said that lectures were carrying on and we should come inside," she said.
This law student says although he doesn't agree with the manner in which the workers are voicing their frustrations, he thinks they have a right to earn a decent salary.
"I don't think that it's wrong in any way to want an increase in wage or to want to take up any of those issues. I do believe there is a process and protocol to follow," he said.
Police and security personnel remain on standby.
