Penny Sparrow: Court denies daughter's request for postponement
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The Scottburgh Equality Court has ruled that the matter against former real estate agent Penny Sparrow will go ahead despite her daughter's plea for a postponement.

The ANC took legal action against Sparrow for her social media post in January this year where she referred to black beachgoers as monkeys.
Sparrow's daughter, Charmaine Cowie, pleaded with the court to have the matter postponed as her mother has been unable to secure legal representation.
She also pleaded that her mother was old, unemployed, a pensioner and feared for her life.
Cowie maintained though that she did not want to speak any further as she did not want to say something that the court might use against her.
Magistrate Irfaan Khalil said he understood the court would only grant a postponement under compelling reasons that are also in the interest of justice.
He said he failed to see how the request met that criteria.
Meanwhile, Advocate Denzil Potgieter, for the ANC, said they don’t wish to put forward any new evidence, but went on to emphasize the negative consequences of Sparrow’s online post.
