A man is in a critical condition after he was shot in the stomach in an alleged attempted robbery on Washington Road in Pietermaritzburg yesterday.
Spokesperson for ER24, Werner Vermaak, says when paramedics arrived on scene the man was lying on the side of the road. They were flagged down by bystanders trying to help the man. Vermaak says the man sustained serious gunshot wounds.
"The bystanders indicated that a man was shot nearby and paramedics decided to investigate. According to the bystanders the victim was robbed by an unknown number of men before he was shot," he said.
"He was treated on scene before being rushed through to a nearby hospital," Vermaak said.
Meanwhile a bus driver is being hailed for saving his passengers after a shootout on Blair Atholl road in Westville on Friday. He allegedly still drove the bus while injured to the police station after the shootout.
Three other people were injured during the incident. All four were transported to hospital. Vermaak says it is unclear what the circumstances are surrounding the shoot out.
