A four-year-old child has died after being hit by a bakkie on the R617 in Pietermaritzburg.
ER24's Russel Meiring says the incident happened in Mafakatini and on arrival they found the child in the middle of the road being treated by another emergency service.
He says advance life support paramedics began treating him before transporting him to hospital.
"On route to hospital the child's vital signs diminished and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was initiated. CPR was continued at hospital for a further 40 minutes. The child unfortunately succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead at hospital.
"The driver of the bakkie as well as the child's father fortunately did not sustain any injuries. Local authorities will be investigating this matter further," he said.
