Fields Hill truck owner case postponed to September
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Gregory Govender - the owner of the truck that ploughed into dozens of people at the bottom of Fields Hill in Pinetown in September 2013 - has appeared in court for the second time.
24 people were killed when the Sagekal Logistics-owned vehicle - driven by Swazi national Sanele May - crashed through a red robot and into various vehicles- including a fully-loaded minibus taxi.
Govender appeared in the Verulam Magistrate's Court in Durban this morning.
His case was later postponed to September 26, for representations to be made by his attorney, Theasen Pillay, to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The businessman was supported at the court house by a few close family members during his second appearance. Once proceedings got underway, he showed no emotion - standing quietly as he took the stand.
Govender now face four charges - including employing an illegal immigrant, operating an unroadworthy vehicle, and operating a vehicle that was not safe to the public - after not initially being charged in the fatal 2013 crash.
Magistrate Rajesh Parshotam informed the accused that he was expected to appear before the court at 8:30 am for his next court appearance.
