City council squashes debate over purchase of new mayoral cars

eThekwini council speaker Lekgoa Mapena has shot down a motion tabled for debate over whether the city should continue buying new cars for new mayors.
The city’s special council sitting is underway at the Durban City Hall - to address issues that were deferred at the inaugural council sitting last month.
Mapena was challenged by the DA caucus leader - Zwakele Mncwango.
"Because I've ruled on the item; I don't know which point of order you want to make, because the city manager is presenting the meeting and I've ruled that the matter is closed. If you are not satisfied with my point of order then sorry. But I have ruled. Close on the matter," he said.
Mapena was yesterday presented with a written motion from the DA to be debated in today’s council, on the issue of mayoral cars.
He came under fire from the opposition for not providing reasons for disallowing the debate.
eThekwini bought new cars for Mayoral Fleet in 2014, and now want to buy another luxury car. DA's objection blocked. #durbancouncil
