Twelve dazzling photos of this week's Southern Lights

"These pics were taken this weekend and I had to share. They are breathtaking *adds to bucket list*" - Keri Miller

Telescope - southern lights
The northern lights (or aurora borealis) has been on my bucket list since I first heard about this beautiful phenomenon. My brother and I dreamed of the day or night we got to see them.

The thing is... up until last night I never even knew that the Southern Lights existed. This earth continues to amaze me.

An aurora, sometimes referred to as a polar light, is a natural light display in the sky, predominantly seen in the high latitude (Arctic and Antarctic) regions.

The Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) and Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) are the results of electrons colliding with the upper reaches of Earth's atmosphere.

It was quite an experience, and made me feel a little less #fomo at missing out on the Northern Lights.

First encounter with aurora australis. a faint one tho 😪 #auroraaustralis

WOW... last night's aurora over Tinderbox in southern Tassie thanks to @helenawisby123. The Aurora Australis, or Southern Lights, happens when the sun releases a massive burst of solar wind and magnetic fields into space! As a rule of thumb the further south and the further away from cities / towns the better your chances of seeing an aurora are... and guess what? Tassie is one of the best places to get up close and personal with auroras... in the world 😍 #tasmania #tassie #tassiepics #instatasmania #tasmaniagram #hobart #hobartandbeyond #clicktasmania #seeaustralia #aurora #auroraaustralis #discoveraustralia #discovertasmania #amazingtasmania #amazingaustralia #exploretasmania #exploreaustralia #australia #getlostnow #gosomewhere
