THURSDAY 16 OCTOBER

Brett Newski @ Cottam Castle
American folk singer Brett Newski has visited Durban twice before.

He loves this place so much he hustled a house show so he could return yet again. He’ll be playing at Cottam Castle, which is a house in the city that occasionally gets used for gigs and they always turn out to be rather charming.

Brett travels the world playing punky folk music and is worth a look-see if you feeling like something different to do. There is limited space so get there early. For more info check out the Facebook page event here. Tickets are R50-R100.

FRIDAY 17 OCTOBER

80's Rewind @ The Barnyard
The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway is rewinding back in time as they prepare to stage the most daring 80's rock show ever. It starts this weekend and will run through the festive season till the 11th January 2015. They are talking retro fashion, dance and, of course, 80's music. Tickets are R155 per person from Wednesday to Saturday, with discounted specials on Tuesday and Sunday. For bookings and enquiries, phone The Barnyard Theatre on 031 – 566 3045.

SATURDAY 18 OCTOBER

Poetry Africa Finale @ The Rivertown Beerhall
This year's Poetry Africa festival moves to a new venue, the Rivertown Beerhall, for its finale. The programme begins at 11am with a free Creative Writing workshop featuring festival poets Vangi Ganthso and Croc E Moses. This will be followed by open mic and musical performances as well as the launch of three poetry publications. The evening programme will kick off with the annual Slam Jam event at 4pm where Durban slam poets will compete for the title of Poetry Africa Slam champion. There will then be final performances from Poetry Africa participants before the programme concludes with a performance from HHP. Tickets are available at the door for R80 and through Computicket at R70.

SUNDAY 19

Open mic jam session @Jack Rabbits, Morningside
Jack Rabbits in Morningside will be hosting something a little different this Sunday and its sounds like loads of fun. There’ll be a  few instruments and set up on the stage so anyone can get up and have a go. There will also be a fire going so anyone is welcome to bring their own meat or soy products to braai. Cash bar as always and it's free to all. It will also be Matt Wilson’s (Sibling Rivalry and The Accidentals) final hoorah and he’s excited to have a final jam with all the Durban muso's before he head to the states.

Matthew Mole, Hot Water and Monark @ Durban Botanic Gardens
Matthew Mole's debut album entered iTunes at number one, and his down to earth lyrics and banjo riffs have made him number one in our hearts. Catch Matthew live at the Durban Botanic Gardens, along with Hot Water and Monark. Gates open at 1.30pm and the music starts at 3pm. Bring along your picnic blanket and basket for a fun Sunday afternoon out. Book your tickets here
