Top lifesaving action in Durban

The junior and senior men’s and women’s three-day competition will be preceded by the 2015 South African Masters Surf Lifesaving Championships on Thursday 23 April which will see some of the country’s top age group competitors go head to head for this year’s national spoils.

“We at Suncoast Pirates are really looking forward to having the country’s lifesaving fraternity join us here at our home for this year’s national championships,” says Suncoast Pirates SLC Chairman, Anton Fouché.

“A lot of work has gone into getting everything ready and it has been a lot bigger job than we first anticipated however it has been great to see how our whole club has rallied together to help and we have a great committee at Pirates that has lead operations really well. Everything is all on track. The tents are already up on the beach, the announcers tower is busy going up at the moment and I’m sure it is going to be another great nationals for the masters, juniors and seniors alike here at Pirates!” he adds.

KwaZulu-Natal is once again set to be well represented as last year’s runners-up Marine SLC look to go one better in 2015, hosts Suncoast Pirates look to use home ground to their advantage and perennial top performers Durban Surf aim to continue their long standing presence amongst the country’s best.

It is, however, Fish Hoek SLC that come into this year’s clash as defending champions and the Western Cape outfit is eager to make take the title back home with them once more.

An event of this size and nature doesn’t happen with significant financial investment and Fouché and his committee were over the moon when the South African Sugar Association and Illovo Sugar put their hands up to assist with footing this year’s nationals’ bill.

“The sugar industry is a proud supporter and one of the sponsors of the South African National Lifesaving event because of its important social contribution through a range of skills development initiatives,” says South African Sugar Association Executive Director Trix Trikam.

“The sugar industry has a long history of significant socio-economic contribution and development in South Africa and values the contribution Lifesaving South Africa makes in society through their spirit of volunteer work and training,” he adds.

Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World is another to have stood by Pirates SLC in recent years and Fouché and the rest of the club are grateful for their support, not only of this year’s national champs but the club as a whole.
