The Central Applications Office (CAO) says of the more than 137 000 applications received - offers were only made to 20 000 applicants.
This means that more than 100 000 prospective students who wanted to study at universities in KZN this year - weren't successful.

"I have to say, however, the number of offers made have decreased somewhat this year. Last year, 25 000 offers were made. I don't know the number of places institutions have of course but the number of offers they would make is dependent on the number of places they have. So whilst they have a high number of people applying - offers are made on a ranked kind of order," he said.
Nationally, over 827 000 candidates sat for the final matric exams last year.
