Naptosa believes the country's education system needs to be overhauled.

Spokesperson Anthony Pierce feels the problem is in the classroom. Pierce says Maths and Science results continue to disappoint.

"The question that must be asked is why. The short answer to that is majority of our teachers have a challenge in respect of Science and Maths. The once-off workshops that are being conducted are not more than just an event.

"They don't provide the capacity teachers require in order to deliver on those subjects," he said.

He believes the situation is made worse by some students who enter the teaching profession because they consider it an easy option - and not because they're passionate about education.

"More recent crop of teachers come into the system, calculating the rands and cents that they're going to earn. I'm afraid that today we have far more mercenaries in the system than we have teachers," he said.
