Fees protests: Update on SA universities

New concerns have blossomed for students at UKZN amongst other issues plans that the institution will reportedly make laptops compulsory for first-year students.

Earlier today, there were disruptions at UKZN's Maritzburg campus - SRC says many students face the risk of being excluded from the curriculum next year due to unpaid fees. 


The representative body says The Fees Must Fall campaign has allowed them to voice these concerns. 


Management however says police and security has been reinforced to prevent any disruptions during the exam period. 


Meanwhile, academic classes at DUT has been operating normally without any disruptions.


While at Wits, calm has been restored following fires that were alleged to have been deliberately lit on the premises overnight. Images from the unrest show overturned concrete bins scattered on the grounds.

Last week, demonstrations were staged against a proposed 10.5% fee hike for 2016. The President has since announced that there will be a 0% fee increase for the prospective year. 


At the University of Cape Town, management has revoked an interdict that set out to prevent students from disrupting normal learning activities amongst other conditions on October 19. 


The institution has also stated charges against any offences committed during the protest have since been dropped. 


North West University's Mafikeng campus has been closed today after management and staff were reportedly locked out of campus. Management says there has been considerable damage to property. 


Academic activities have also been suspended at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology today and tomorrow after students blocked entrances to the main and upper campuses. CPUT management are still in talks with students in a way forward.
