South Africans aren’t having enough sex

Darren and Natarah chatted to renowned sex therapist Dr Marlene Wasserman, more popularly known as Dr Eve, and asked her whether South Africans are having enough sex. This is what she had to say.

We asked our listeners to share whether they got some nookie on Valentine’s Day.

According to the results, 58% of couples had sex. On the other hand, a significant 42% did not.

What these results show is that while it’s widely expected, many couples aren’t doing bedroom aerobics on what’s considered to be the most romantic day on the calendar.

Can this be said for every other day of the year?

Darren and Natarah decided to put the question to clinical sexologist Dr Eve to find out why many couples aren’t having sex. She also explained the importance of a healthy sex life.

Questions:

1. Dr Eve, how do South Africans’ bedroom habits compare to other countries? Are we having enough sex?

South Africans are not sexual enough. There are too many obstacles in our way, like societal norms, societal beliefs, fears like HIV or pregnancy and no one really talks about the pleasure that is actually derived from the thing called sexuality.

2. What is the new sex trend everyone is talking about or doing?

There is a lot of sex that is happening - but it’s happening online, especially for women. This is the newest revolution, called simulated cyber activity. So, this means people (married or single) are going onto chat sites and after a few online dates, they have online sex.

3. Why is having sex on a regular basis good for you?

It’s a healthy releasing of chemicals and hormones in our blood streams; it makes you feel good, gives you a sense of relief and some studies show that it can also prevent diseases. Some research has revealed that in men, frequent ejaculation can help keep prostate cancer at bay.

3. What is getting in the way of us having more sex?

People are too busy to have sex. They have many obstacles that prevent them from having sex.
