Indaba discusses procurement transformation

Co-operative Governance Minister Pravin Gordhan says procurement across all three spheres of government must aid economic development and benefit the majority of South Africans through income generation.

Gordhan was speaking at a procurement indaba in Durban yesterday.

He says this is one way of addressing economic inequality in the country.

"The [objective] of income generation and wealth creation is to make sure that we begin to eradicate poverty. In particular, as the National Development Plan says, we need to eradicate inter-generational poverty. We can't have one generation after another passing on poverty onto the next generation, because then we're not getting out of the cycle of poverty and lack of development on the economic front," he said.

Also speaking at the Indaba, KZN Finance MEC, Belinda Scott said policies have been put in place to ensure the previously marginalised are considered for economic opportunities.

"In line with national treasury's regulatory framework, various governnment departments have since enacted procurement policies which favour the purchasing of goods from historically disadvantaged groups. This policy directive is ideologically aimed at de-racialising the economy of our country and KZN is no exception," she said.

The focus of the two-day indaba was on transformation in procurement. Other speakers included Premier Senzo Mchunu, Economic Development MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu and Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene.
