Kevlar Kev takes us back to the 80’s

If you were an 80’s baby then this will bring back tons of good memories. Kevlar Kev takes us down memory lane

Fortunately, I remember the 80’s. Like so many of us, I was there. I’m an early 70’s baby, so the 80’s were pretty much my entire schooling years.

Of course, at the time, the 80’s were cutting edge.

We were so advanced, I mean, I even had this little device that I could put a cassette in and actually walk around, with my own personal music in my ears!

What a technological marvel was the Sony Walkman.

I remember being super jealous of my older brother’s walkman, because his had fast-forward and rewind. If I wanted to hear a song again, I would have to take the tape out, fast-forward it back to the beginning of the song by mere guesswork, and then turn it over an push play, and then keep repeating until I actually got it to the right spot.

My favourite music back in the 80’s came from Dire Straits, A-ha, OMD, John Lennon and some left-overs from the 70’s like The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac and The Beatles.

My all-time favourites though, were the Pet Shop Boys. I knew every song, had every tape and used to sing their songs all the time. I was sooooo excited when they came to Durban last month - and Jane Linley-Thomas and I got to go backstage and meet them. It was quite surreal meeting Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, although it was brief as they were about to go on stage. I partied and danced myself silly that night, and I am pleased to say I will be doing the same at the 80’s Rewind next month. I may even wear leg warmers.

Check out the East Coast Breakfast throwback to the 80’s music video on our Facebook page, and hopefully I will see you on February 7, all dressed up and reliving those days of Sony walkman’s, MacGyver, Magnum PI, terrible hair and leather pants.
