Better kob fishing on the Bluff

Reports from the Bluff suggest that kob fishing in the area has improved over the past week.

Kosi Bay - Kosi has had some excellent fishing for anglers fishing for edibles, with the catch comprising mainly of bonefish and stump nose. The sea has settled somewhat and the water clarity is good. Non-edible anglers saw a handful of blacktip sharks come to land earlier in the mornings, most of which took bonito or whole mackerel slide baits.

Cape Vidal - Most anglers have been successful in this area and surroundings, with the Vidal beach stretch to the left of the launch site being the main area of concentration due to the high numbers of shad and kingfish. Shad have been caught along this stretch on Falcon spoons early in the mornings and at intervals throughout the day, whereas bait has been producing the bigger fish easily making size.

Richards Bay - Many anglers have tried their luck at garrick angling over the last week and have been successful. Anglers using live shad and mullet have been hooking into good fish. Other than that, nothing much to write home about. Anglers in the bay have hooked into nice fish as well, using small live mullet.

Tugela - This spot has seen an outbreak of garrick and kob action. Many anglers have had success on live baits and the odd garrick has been caught on plug too. The water has been very clean and there has been a strong current, besides that, not much has got in the way of anglers getting what they have gone for.

Salt Rock - A few lucky anglers hooked into some decent shad off the Dave’s Rock area and surroundings and for the anglers targeting a larger variety of fish, a good run of grey sharks in the evenings.

Zimbali - Anglers fishing around the new mouth hooked into a few snapper salmon and half kob in the late afternoons and into the night. The fish seem to come and go throughout the day, so don't be scared to wait it out if things are quiet.

Umhlanga Rocks - Shad have been caught in numbers in the general Umhlanga area. Most of these fish have been landed in the mornings, but evenings have been relatively productive as well.

Blue Lagoon - Last week saw good action with shad and garrick which have recently moved in. Anglers have had success with garrick on live shad and one or two anglers have had garrick follow their plugs. Shad have been more plentiful during the day and with the sea conditions forecasted for the week to come, we will all be in the hot-seat for a garrick and some good sized shad.

Durban Piers and Beachfront – This area has produced hundreds of shad on baits and spoon. Grey sharks have been plentiful on red eye baits and also mackerel baits. There have been good reports of anglers targeting stumpies off the banks.

Bluff - Reports of kob have been better than the previous weeks, with nothing else to really write home about.

Toti - Reports of garrick from the spearos, some good size specimens being landed on live shad. Not as many fish have been landed, but the size of these fish are better than before.

Umkomaas - Small grunter and shad have been landed regularly over the last week off the pier at Umkomaas. There have been a few smaller skates in the area as well and kob have been caught on McArthy Paddletails.

Scottburgh - Shad and grey sharks have been the main species around this area of late. Most grey sharks have been around 8kg and are proving to be awesome fun on light tackle. Most of these fish have been caught on whole red eye baits.

Port Edward - Shad have been on the bite in this area and the only days where they were not so active were when the rough sea conditions were experienced. Fishermen on one day were all 'taken to the cleaners' when big sharks moved in and reports of eight failures to land these fish after the big pulls came. The following day a ragged tooth shark  of 94kg was landed by a lucky angler. Large kob are biting as well and most fish are being taken on live shad bait.
