The Sibaya Community Trust this morning launched a programme in iLembe aimed at assisting poor performing schools in the province.

Chairman of the Sibaya Community Trust, Vivian Reddy says the aim of the initiative is to motivate learners and educators to improve their performance by awarding bursary and cash prizes.

Awards range from 10 000 to 200 000 for high performing learners and teachers.

Reddy says they want learners to be proud of their schools and avoid a situation where school-goers do not have adequate classrooms or materials.

One learner says the school lacks resources.

"We always attend those classes but the problem is that we don't have textbooks. If we don't have textbooks, we can't do any work," he said.

MEC Peggy Nkonyeni acknowledged the poor performance of the class of 2015. She says through Operation Bounce Back they hope to improve the province's performance by at least 10%.

She's urged students to focus on their studies and avoid distractions.

MEC Peggy Nkyonyeni also commented on some pupils implicated in last year's group copying scandal. She told ECR Newswatch that the matter has still not been fully resolved.
