At least 180 beach rescues recorded in Durban

At least 800 000 people soaked up the sun at Durban's beaches over the long New Year's weekend.
eThekwini Municipality says approximately 186 rescues were carried out by lifeguards at various beaches in and around the city, with 518 people being treated for various injuries - including blue-bottle stings and cuts.

More than 420 children got separated from their parents and guardians while dozens of people were arrested for bad behaviour.
Thirty-three people were taken into police custody for various offences - including harassment, public drinking, and theft.
