Parliamentary committee to keep eye on SA Post Office
Parliaments's Portfolio Committee on Telecommunications and Postal Services says it will be checking in on the struggling SA Post Office on a weekly basis, following an urgent meeting with its management yesterday.
The committee's chairperson Mmamoloko Kubayi says at the meeting, management briefed the committee on the problems the post office is facing.
Last week post office staff in Gauteng embarked on a one-day strike over a number of issues, including that workers were paid only half of their salaries earlier this month by the cash-strapped parastatal.
The Post Office said it would pay out the rest of their salaries month-end.
Kubayi says they are worried that there wasn't proper communication with workers before their payment contracts were changed.
She says there's also concern over the implementation of a turnaround strategy which is supposed to generate income.
"We've given them some time to go and correct those wrong things. For example, even the clear figures of how much they need to be able to turn around the post office, their projection in terms of their future losses - those figures were not available."
"We've advised the post office to go and ask for secondment of the people who can come assist them with managing their finances," she said.
Post Office management has promised to prioritise salary payment and ensure staff are always paid in full.
