Carrabelle the cow's dramatic rescue

Carrabelle the cow's dramatic rescue

Video footage has been released showing a dramatic rescue of a cow that had fallen off a cliff in Drummond, west of the province.

Carrabelle, the cow

A cow - nicknamed as Carrabelle - had injured its hind legs after falling about 15 metres off a cliff edge.

The SA Community Action Network's Andreas Mathios says they received a call from the farmer asking for assistance.

The organisation's Andreas Mathios says the whole rescue operation was co-ordinated.

"We witnessed how the humanity of people came together - people from the community and Phezulu Park coming out to help and bring water to the people on the rescue site," he said.

He says Carrabelle is recovering well after the incident.

"A local vet came to assess the cow on Saturday.  She has been sitting on her back legs on the riverbed for six or seven hours. Her legs were lame, she couldn't walk.

"By yesterday morning, she was visibly fatigued and dehydrated. Members of the farming community kept feeding the cow. It was an amazing thing to witness," he said.
