Never fear, here are four DIY race day headpieces that will add an extra 'wow' factor to a tried and tested outfit or will surely get your creative juices flowing.

Lucky for us, head accessories have moved far and beyond the formal Ascot Race hat. There are super exciting headgear trends and for the most part you can break the rules.

1. Flower Power

Be a new age hippie this year and simply invest in a bunch of faux flowers. Fresh flowers look great for five seconds. As soon as you mention a bobby pin they begin to wilt. All you need to do is break the faux flower buds off their stems and clip them onto an elastic headband. I used the ultra cheap kind I buy to keep my hair back while I wash my face. You can clip flower buds around the circumference of your head or choose to just do the front. It all depends on colour and what mood you’re in on the day.

2. Choke Chain

Nicole Richie has made this look legendary. I love this look paired with a maxi dress. In fact, it's the only way to wear this look. There are a number of ways you can achieve this. All I did was sifted out an old chocker necklace and pinned it into place. Easy peasy!

3. Wrap It

This look is so African Diva meets Posh Goddess. I love it. Not only is it ultra slick but also, depending on what fabric you choose, you can really make a statement. All you do is literally wrap the fabric around your head then twist. Tie the extra fabric into a knot on the top or to the side of your head. Head to the Waste Centre for some fabric off-cuts or raid through your closet, you’re sure to have a silk scarf somewhere that could suffice.

4. The Turban

This look is only for the truly dedicated as it can go horribly wrong. First prize is finding a ready made fitted turban. Then all you need to do is add a broach to the centre. If you can't find your own ready made fitted turban then don't even attempt this look. Promise. If you are desperate for a fitted turban, local designer Bianca Kim has some black velvet babies available but you need to order no later than today. Find her details here

Voila. Happy race day.
