What's on in Durban this weekend
Updated | By Staff Writer
Our pick of where to go and what to do this weekend, including Durban's memorial service for Madiba and a host of markets. Plus, win tickets to the Durban Electronic Music Festival here.
FRIDAY 13th
Madiba Memorial Service
The Moses Mabhida Stadium is hosting a memorial service for Madiba on Friday and a night vigil on Saturday evening. It will be a whole day event that will run from 9am through to 4pm. A crowd of about 80 000 are expected to attend and there will be massive road closures so please click here for all the details. The full line-up has not been confirmed; but we can confirm there will be no Obama speech. We can definitely confirm that Durban city will pull out all the stops to make this a really special event.
The Unemployables
It’s around this time of year that the freelance folk would trade in their home offices and flexi hours for a Christmas bonus and festive end of year party. If you are feeling a little sorry for your freelance self then the Unemployables End Of Year Party is where it’s at. Mingle with like-minded folk at Ciao Bella in Point Road. There is R50 cover charge and it should be lots of fun.

SATURDAY 14th
Durban Electronic Music Festival
The DEMF gets underway at some of the country's finest dj’s crank up the heat at Berea Rovers fields. The line-up looks insane; Euphonik, Liquideep, Pascal & Pearce plus two international acts; Juicy M and Tony Cha Cha. There’s talk of a slip and slide and a Jacuzzi. Slap on a bikini and get ready for some serious bootie shaking. All tickets are available at Computicket. Or you can win a pair of VIP tickets right here. Simply tell us the name of the comic character in the image below. Email your answer to [email protected] and those tickets could be yours! (*We've got two VIP tickets and four regular tickets to give away)

Moses Mabhida Night Vigil for Madiba
If you can’t make the full memorial service on Friday, the Moses Mabhida Stadium will be holding a night vigil for our precious Nelson Mandela. Pay you respects to the man that saved our nation.
SUNDAY 15th
Stroll through the Chris Sauder’s Park in Umhlanga at the Wonder Market this Sunday. One of the biggest trends of 2013 is to buy local so support your local artisans while enjoying some good food and good vibes. There will be carols by candlelight this Sunday so the market kicks off a little later than usual. It starts at 12pm and runs through the evening till 8pm. What a great way to spend a Sunday evening.

MONDAY 16th
Shongweni Christmas Market
Do some alternative Christmas shopping at the Shogweni Christmas market. All the usual farm traders will be out to share the goods as well creative crafts and décor. No doubt the malls will be packed so trade in that air con and parking lot rage to brave the wide-open space up in the valley of 1000 hills. The market gets under way at 9am till 4pm and entry is free.

Music @ Upstairs
Monday night sees some amazing musicians at Upstairs! Vana of the Oh So Serious Folk Collective and Hoot 'n Anny come rolling into town for a night of magic and moonshine-drinking, foot stomping folk songs. Local lady Shannon Connolly will join in the fun for a full compliment of folk-blues and country jams in Durban's most intimate live music venue. Doors open at 6pm, R40 will get you in.
