NYC apartment

Someone's landlord is bound to get a pretty interesting e-mail! In a video that has gone viral, Samantha Hartsoe unearths an entire apartment hiding behind her bathroom mirror while searching for the cause of a draft inside her bathroom.

Samantha discovered the draft and decided to film her discovery process which unearthed an entire three bedroom apartment inside the mirror. In the first video, Samantha explains that there has been a cold draft in the bathroom since she moved in and she wanted to finally get to the bottom of it.

“It was weird, because I don’t have a vent that I know of in there that blows cold air,” she says. After searching the entire bathroom, she discovers that the cold air is coming from the sides of her bathroom mirror – comparing the discovery to films like ‘Parasite’ and ‘Candyman’.

In the series of videos, Samantha decides to go explore the apartment hidden behind her bathroom mirror. She puts on a headlamp, takes a hammer with her as a weapon, and climbs through the wall – all while talking to her roommate.

“You’re in the other side of the dimension!” her roommate tells her as she enters the apartment. “Go onward.”

Samantha did discover that the apartment shows “signs of life” as she finds a heap of trash bags and an empty water bottle. But, after an investigation, Samantha decided that the ripped-up floors, exposed piping, and the lack of a toilet or bathtub made the space uninhabitable. “I’m not sure if it was being renovated or if it is empty. It’s really old, and nobody’s been in there a while,” she says. The shower-bathroom area is all piping — there’s no actual bathtub or toilet. The floor, and what I think would be the kitchen, was ripped up.”

After bringing the hidden apartment to the attention of the building managers, even they can’t understand its origins.

“I think everybody in New York has such small apartments, you don’t know what you’re going to find,” Samantha says. “And everyone’s hoping for more space.”
