The pandemic posed lots of changes in our lives. From adapting to working from home to wearing masks, there has been a fair amount of change in our lifestyles.

But for this legal advisor, we think it was about finding some comfort in her balancing act of working from home. For her that meant taking her office chair home with her - and this is when the wheels fell off...

"The employee had taken the liberty of seizing the office chair as the archdiocese asked staff to work from home due to the coronavirus pandemic. The judge found that the necessary equipment had not been made available to staff when the archdiocese told its employees to work from home in most circumstances early in 2020." The thing about having to transition so suddenly into working from home, was that many people's homes were not equipped for a 'work-from-home' setup.

As the case was taken to court, it seemed that the employer's lawyer defended that the 'ergomonic chair' was of considerable value and that she should not have taken it home.

However, the courts ruled that it was illegal for them to have dismissed her for this reason. If you are going to ask employees to work from home, there should be reasonable recourse for them to work from home.

There is an appeal with the case, but as of now, we think that we should all learn to 'chair' our discussions out like grown ups...
