The #BigFavour lends a helping hand to Vukukhanye

Vukukhanye is an isiZulu word which means "arise and shine", and it reflects the charity's vision for the upliftment of the underprivileged, poor, and marginalised people of South Africa. On Thursday, the Big Favour helped play a part in this.

Vukukhanye is a non-profit, public benefit organisation formed in 2001, assisting vulnerable families in the communities of Chesterville and Cato Manor.

The main services provided by Vukukhanye include:

  • A Children's Foster Home (est. 2001) caring for orphans and vulnerable children
  • The Vukukhanye Educare Centre (est. February 2012) which enrols 60 children under six years of age.
  • A Bursary Project (Est 2008) offering 20 long-term renewable school and tertiary bursaries. They have had four graduates thus far
  • Health and Welfare support services in Chesterville including support of vulnerable and child-headed families through home-visits, school fee provision, stationery, and uniforms and counselling and supportive services to Chesterville community members
  • Support for community-based organisations and schools

Anthony van der Meulen from Vukukhanya contacted the Big Favour asking for support for the Shekinah Crèche which is in desperate need of furniture and outdoor equipment for their children.

Anna Ndebele is the supervisor at Shekinah Crèche which enrols 35 children between two and five years of age, and currently runs from a 12m x 3m park home.

We were joined in studio by Kelly Graham, the Communications Manager of Suncoast Casino, who gave Anna the good news. Tables and chairs for the kids, two jungle gyms, and even lockers for the children to store their bags will be delivered to the creche in the next day or two.
