Jane's inspiring journey with Rally to Read
Updated | By Jane Linley-Thomas
What Jane learned from visiting underprivileged schools with the Rally to Read team
This weekend was a very joyous and emotional one as I joined the Rally to Read team and headed off up North through rural KZN to visit two schools in the area to deliver reading books, stationary, soccer balls, face cloths and soap.
As we arrived at the first school I felt my tummy flip like it does when riding a roller coaster.
Little school kids lined up for hours waiting for us to arrive.
Bright smiley faces beaming all dressed up in their small drum majorette uniforms in the freezing KZN air giving us what felt like a royal welcome.
We spent about 3 hours at each school and in both places were treated to singing, reading, plays and dancing.
I even got to 'Zulu dance' in front of 800 school kids to their delight and my embarrassment, all in the name of fun and unity.
What struck me most was the overwhelming sense of appreciation for something as basic as a soap wrapped in a facecloth, and how their little eyes sparkled at the box of brand new school books.
The excitement for growth was inspiring, humbling to say the very least and what a powerful reminder to appreciate all that we have.
