Altron has officially launched South Africa’s first operational artificial intelligence (AI) factory, marking a milestone moment for the country’s digital and technological landscape.

The new facility is powered by Nvidia’s AI infrastructure, featuring accelerated computing and Nvidia AI Enterprise software. Hosted at Teraco, one of the country’s leading data centres, the factory delivers comprehensive AI infrastructure, training and support. Importantly, it does so while maintaining strict data sovereignty and compliance with South African regulations.

What is an AI factory?

According to Nvidia, an AI factory is a specialised system built to turn data into useful insights. It handles every stage of the AI process, from collecting and preparing data to training and fine-tuning models and running large-scale AI tasks. Its main output is intelligence, which helps improve decision-making, automation and the creation of new AI solutions.

What is the purpose of it?

The AI factory aims to serve as a launchpad for innovation and growth across various industries. It is already operational, with five launch customers including analytics company Dataviue, African language translation startup Lelapa AI and adaptive education non-profit MathU.

“Our launch customers enable our goal for this platform to become a launchpad to support their vision,” said Altron Group CTO, Bongani Andy Mabaso. “It will also speed up their AI development and the delivery of services to the market, supporting them as they solve challenges in ways only South African companies can.”

How does the facility ensure data security?

Altron explained that the AI factory keeps all sensitive information within South Africa’s jurisdiction. This ensures data is protected by local laws, addressing one of the most significant concerns businesses face when adopting AI technologies globally.

According to MyBroadband, the initiative helps enterprises maintain control over their data while accessing powerful AI capabilities locally. This combination of infrastructure, training and governance offers a strong foundation for organisations exploring advanced AI applications.

What does this mean for South African industries?

MathU founder WA Burger also shared how the platform has already made a difference. “We’re accessing the same AI infrastructure that global giants use and AI models that align with our market reality,” said Burger. “This enables us to iterate faster and scale our personalised education platform with confidence.”

How does Altron’s approach benefit local businesses?

Altron Digital Business executive for data and AI, Mike Wright, explained that the AI factory gives customers immediate access to tools, expertise and infrastructure without the long wait times or offshore dependencies often associated with AI development.

Mabaso added that Altron’s goal is to blend world-class technology with local relevance. “We’re not choosing between global technology excellence and local context; we’re combining both,” he said.

By doing so, Altron positions South Africa as a competitive player in the growing field of artificial intelligence while addressing the unique needs of local businesses and institutions.
