SASSA confirms R370 SRD grant will continue until 2027
Updated | By Stacey & J Sbu
Government has officially confirmed the R370 SRD payment will continue until March 2027. Here’s who qualifies and what happens next.
For millions of unemployed South Africans, the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant remains a crucial monthly lifeline and there’s now confirmation that it’s not going away anytime soon.
The SRD grant, administered by South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), will continue until 31 March 2027 at its current value of R370 per month.
Originally introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic as temporary financial relief, the grant has evolved into one of South Africa’s biggest social support programmes, helping millions of financially vulnerable people every single month.

Treasury confirms extension until 2027
According to the 2026 Budget Review released by the National Treasury earlier this year, government has allocated an additional R36.4 billion to keep the SRD grant running for another year.
Treasury stated: “The social relief of distress grant is allocated an additional R36.4 billion to extend payments until 31 March 2027 at the current R370 per month per beneficiary.”
At the moment, around 8.2 million South Africans receive the grant every month. That means government is paying out more than R3 billion every month just to sustain the SRD system. By the end of the year, the total cost reaches over R36 billion.
However, Treasury documents also show reduced allocations beyond 2027, sparking ongoing discussions about the future of the grant and whether South Africa could eventually introduce a form of permanent basic income support.
Who qualifies for the SRD grant?
To qualify for the SRD grant, applicants must:
- Be between 18 and 60 years old
- Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, refugee, asylum seeker or special permit holder
- Be unemployed
- Have no source of income or financial support
- Not receive another SASSA social grant
- Not receive UIF benefits
- Not receive an NSFAS stipend
The grant is specifically designed for people experiencing serious financial hardship who have little or no access to other forms of state support.

How SRD payments work
Unlike permanent SASSA grants that are paid on fixed dates each month, SRD payments are processed in staggered batches.
This means beneficiaries may receive payments on different days depending on verification and processing timelines.
SASSA advises beneficiaries to regularly check their application and payment status through official platforms to confirm when funds will reflect.
For many South Africans, that R370 may not stretch very far in today’s economy, but for millions, it’s still the difference between having something and having absolutely nothing.
