Millions of South Africans depend on social grants administered by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) for financial support. According to Statista, approximately 40% of individuals and 50% of households in South Africa benefited from social grants as of 2023.

Earlier this year, Parliament announced that R292.8 billion had been allocated for social grants during the 2026/27 financial year to support the millions of South Africans who rely on this assistance.

Several grants were also increased this year.

The Older Persons Grant increased by R80 to R2,400 per month, while the War Veterans Grant rose by R80 to R2,420. The Foster Care Grant received a R40 increase, bringing it to R1,300 per month.

While the Child Support Grant and Grant-in-Aid both increased by R20 to R580 per month.

SASSA July payment dates are as follows:

  • Older Persons Grant: Thursday, 2 July 2026
  • Disability Grant and Care Dependency: Friday, 3 July 2026
  • Child Support Grant: Monday, 6 July 2026
  • Exceptions: Tuesday, 7 July 2026

COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant payment dates:

SASSA also announced this week that payments for the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant would be processed between Wednesday, 24 and Thursday, 25 June 2026.

These payment dates often vary, and beneficiaries are encouraged to check their SMS notifications and official SASSA communication channels for updates.

SASSA was established in April 2005 to centralise the administration and payment of social grants in South Africa, although grants such as the Older Persons Grant and Disability Grant had existed for many decades before then.

According to the South African government, when SASSA began operating in April 2006, approximately 10 million grants were being paid to beneficiaries across the country.

Over the years, SASSA has become a vital source of support for many South African families. With unemployment remaining a significant challenge, social grants often provide a crucial safety net for households struggling to meet their basic needs. The grants also assist older persons who do not have access to pension funds, helping them afford essential living expenses.

In addition, vulnerable children, including orphans and those in foster care, benefit from social grants that contribute to their well-being and help ensure they have access to basic necessities. For many households, these grants continue to play an important role in reducing poverty and providing financial relief during difficult times.
