Over two decades, the number of South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) beneficiaries has nearly doubled, from just over 10 million in 2006 to 19 million today.

For millions of South Africans, a social grant income is their only lifeline - standing between keeping the lights on and securing their next meal.

According to SASSA’s latest social assistance report, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has the highest number of social grant recipients, accounting for 22.3% of beneficiaries, or just over 4.2 million, despite the province making up only 19% of the national population.

How KZN SASSA grants are distributed

The report breaks down KwaZulu-Natal’s beneficiary distribution across five primary categories:

  • Child Support Grant: 2,8 million
  • Care Dependency Grants: 43 227
  • Old Age Grant: 826 712
  • Disability Grant: 226 589
  • Foster Child Grant: 29 203

ECR readers weigh in

In a recent East Coast Radio online poll asking readers how vital a social grant is to their household, 67% of participants (647 votes) stated that a grant is their family's only source of income.

Another 15% (140 votes) said it helps cover essential expenses, while 6% (53 votes) noted it provides occasional support. Only 13% (123 votes) indicated that no one in their household receives social assistance.

These numbers highlight a stark reality that millions of South Africans survive on grants ranging between R350 and R 2 400 per month, while the average cost of a basic household food basket stands at R5 502,42 per month, according to the latest Household Affordability Index by the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group (PMBEJD).

SASSA August payment dates confirmed

SASSA has confirmed that August social grant payouts will be processed during the first week of the month on the following dates:

  • Older Persons Grant: Tuesday, 4 August 2026
  • Disability Grant and Care Dependency: Wednesday, 3 August 2026
  • Child Support Grant: Thursday, 6 August 2026
  • Fourth payment day for beneficiaries targeted for reviews - Friday, 7 August 2026

The agency notes that the staggered payment dates are designed to reduce overcrowding at various pay points, ATMs and retailers.

Social Relief of Distress payment dates often vary, and beneficiaries are encouraged to check their SMS notifications and official SASSA communication channels for updates.

Government acknowledges SASSA as a lifeline to millions

At a recent media briefing, Social Development Minister Dina Pule acknowledged that social grants are a lifeline in many South African households.

“Social grants are not merely payments, they are a lifeline to remove poverty from many households, the vulnerable, the child who depends on a grant, the grandmother who holds a household together, the young person searching for dignity and work.

“They help keep the lights on in a household where no one else has an income. They provide support to persons with disabilities and bring stability to families facing difficult circumstances,” Pule said.
