'A salary of R100k is not enough for a family in SA'. Do you agree?
Updated | By East Coast Radio / Stacey & J Sbu
A recent financial analysis has sparked debate after suggesting that a monthly salary of R100,000 may not be enough to support a family of four comfortably in South Africa.
The cost of living in South Africa continues to climb, with many households feeling the pressure of rising food prices, fuel costs, school fees and housing expenses. But a recent analysis has sparked an even bigger conversation: Is a salary of R100000 a month really enough to raise a family of four comfortably?
The debate gained traction after social media strategist Magriet Groenewald shared an Instagram video discussing a Daily Investor article. Her video has since attracted more than a million views.
Initially, Magriet admitted she thought the claim sounded ridiculous. However, after examining the figures herself using her own family, the expenses added up to more than R60000 a month.
Using the example of a family with two teenage children living in the Western Cape, she highlighted how income tax of 30% significantly reduces take-home pay, and after adding all the expenses, families might find themselves not even having enough to save.
She broke down what she considered the costs of maintaining a comfortable middle- to upper-middle-class lifestyle. These included:
- Bond - R30000. She highlighted that in the Western Cape where her family lives, property starts from about R3 million.
- Rates and taxes - R6000
- Electricity, water and other municipal charges - R2000
- Medical aid for a family of four - R2700.
- Private school fees for two teenagers - R20000
- Two financed vehicles - R15000
- Car insurance and fuel - R10000
- Groceries and household essentials - R6000
- Cellphone and internet.
- DSTV, streaming and entertainment subscriptions - R1000
- Household insurance.
- Gym memberships and other day-to-day expenses.
According to her calculations, these expenses could easily total around R68000 a month before accounting for unexpected costs, savings or holidays.
The video quickly divided opinion online.
Some viewers agreed that the figures reflected the reality faced by many middle-class families:
“I can’t even begin to understand these numbers. Granted, I haven’t lived in South Africa for 20 years, but the cost of everything seems insanely high.”
Others argued that the analysis was disconnected from the reality of most South Africans:
“Tell me you’re out of touch with the majority of South African families without telling me. This seems like a post for the 1%.”
Another commenter wrote:
“Give me R100,000 a month and I’ll show you how to live comfortably.”
Some also blamed South Africa’s tax burden, with several saying SARS takes too much from high-income earners.
The debate comes as the majority of South Africans struggle to make ends meet. According to Statistics South Africa, 'the average household income in South Africa sits at roughly R204,359 per year (approx. R17,000 per month), while the median household income is lower at R95,770 per year (approx. R8,000 per month)'. Research from the University of Cape Town also suggests that households earning above R75,000 a month make up less than 2% of the country’s population.
The discussion has raised an important question: does living “comfortably” mean different things to different people, or has the cost of maintaining a middle-class lifestyle simply become unaffordable?
