You’ve won the Lotto… now what? Here’s how South African banks notify you
Updated | By Stacey & J Sbu
This is what happens after you win the Lotto and how to claim your winnings.
South Africans are increasingly buying National Lottery tickets through their banking apps.
However, one question keeps popping up: what actually happens if you win big?
Good news, your bank will let you know. No frantic searching for a tiny paper ticket in the car cubbyhole. No checking yesterday’s jeans pocket like it’s a treasure hunt.

According to The South African, South Africa’s major banks are securely linked to Ithuba, the operator of the National Lottery.
That means winnings are automatically processed directly through your banking profile.
How Lotto winnings are paid out
Banks generally split winnings into two categories:
- Smaller winnings are paid automatically into your bank account. You’ll usually get an SMS or app notification confirming the deposit.
- Large jackpots require extra verification for security reasons. In these cases, your bank or Ithuba will contact you directly to guide you through the claims process.
What each bank does when you win
Capitec
- Winnings under R250,000 are automatically paid into your account.
- If you win more than R250,000, Capitec and Ithuba will contact you directly.
- Players can also track ticket history and draw results in the banking app.
First National Bank (FNB)
- Prizes under R50,000 are automatically deposited, with an SMS or in-app alert.
- Winnings above R50,000 trigger a direct phone call from the bank.
Nedbank
- Amounts below R250,000 are processed automatically.
- Bigger prizes come with a direct SMS and in-app notification explaining the next steps.
ABSA
- Winnings under R50,000 are paid straight into your account with an SMS confirmation.
- Larger payouts require identity verification through a direct call from Absa or Ithuba.
Standard Bank
- Lottery winnings are generally processed within two business days after the draw.
- Winners usually receive an SMS confirming payment.

Important safety tips for Lotto winners
Winning money is exciting, but scammers love excitement too. Keep these tips in mind:
- Never share your PIN, password, or OTP with anyone over the phone.
- Double-check your results inside your banking app before believing any “you’ve won” call.
- Make sure your cellphone number linked to your bank account is up to date.
Buying Lotto tickets through your banking app is considered one of the safest options because the ticket is linked directly to your South African ID and banking profile.
So, if luck finally decides to answer your calls… your bank probably will too.
