Has exam season taken over the entire household?
Updated | By East Coast Radio / Stacey & J Sbu
During exam season, it's often the whole household that adjust, not just the learner. How has exam season affected your household?
Thousands of learners across South Africa are preparing for exams, while some have already started writing. Although examinations are an important milestone for scholars, they often impact the entire household, with families making various changes to support their children through this demanding period. It sometimes feels as if exams are a family activity nobody signed up for.
Bedtime gets delayed
Sleep schedule often changes during exam period. With learners studying later into the evening, or early hours of the morning, lights may stay on longer than usual, affecting the rest of the household. To show support and ensure that the learner does not feel isolated while everyone else sleeps, some families adjust their routines and stay up alongside them until they are done studying. It is one of the many ways parents and siblings rally around learners during exam season.
Chores get reassigned
One of the most common changes during exam season involves household chores. Many parents temporarily relieve their children of some responsibilities so that they can dedicate more time to studying. This often means parents and other family members have to take on additional tasks around the house.
A quieter house
Noise levels also become a major consideration.
Families may have to turn down the volume on televisions, music, and other forms of entertainment to create a quieter environment for studying. What would normally be acceptable noise levels can become distractions when someone in the house is preparing for an important exam.
Snack runs and tea breaks
Exam season can even influence grocery shopping and meal planning.
Parents often make an effort to provide healthier meals and snacks that can help learners stay focused and energised. Whether it is preparing a cup of tea during a late-night study session or stocking up on healthy snacks, these small gestures can go a long way in supporting a child during exams.
A little tougher on the rules
Some parents also become stricter about screen time, limiting access to phones, social media, television, and gaming in an effort to help their children stay focused. While these measures may not always be popular with learners, they are often implemented with good intentions.
Ultimately, exam season is rarely an individual experience. While learners carry the responsibility of writing the exams, many families adjust their routines, habits, and even lifestyles to help them succeed. It is a reminder that behind every successful learner is often a support system working hard to help them reach their goals.
