Updated | By Justin Paul James
It was a story that gripped the hearts of many on the East Coast. Deon had the opportunity of chatting to the parents of Kiara Mun-Gavin, who survived a horror crash on Christmas Eve 2018.
Listen to Deon's interview with Kiara's parents, or read the details under the podcast.
Christmas Eve - a day normally associated with excitement and fun, turned into a nightmare for the Mun-Gavin family.
Kiara, an inspiring ballet dancer, and her mother Jaci were driving to church when their vehicle collided with a motorbike on Mackeurtan Avenue in Durban North. Paramedics arrived to treat Kiara, and she was taken to a nearby hospital.

Jaci's post detailing the horrific crash shortly went viral on social media, with many in and around KZN rallying together to pray for the 13-year-old's recovery.
The first op took place on Christmas Day, but it came with a high risk. Blood and oxygen were not flowing into her brain.
During the interview, Richard detailed the amount of support they received from the people of KZN. Hundreds of people visited them at the hospital to pray for Kiara's recovery.
"Miracles can happen. We are really so grateful for every single message we received. It really was so overwhelming," Richard told Deon.

Following the risky op, on the first day of 2019, a miracle happened. Kiara opened her eyes and began to recognise her family. Doctors could not believe how she managed to recover in such a short space of time.
"We are so grateful for our medical team who have never lost hope and have given Kiara the very best care possible. Yet where Kiara is today is so far beyond the medical and way into the realm of the miraculous. I look forward to the docs report on this in the weeks to come," Richard said in a video which showed Kiara touching her father's hair.

We wish Kiara all the best on her road to recovery - her story is truly an astounding one.
