What makes KZN the best? The province has spoken
We asked KZN: “What makes us the best?”
There are places you visit, places you live, and then there’s KZN.
If you ask someone from KwaZulu-Natal what makes the province special, you probably won’t get one answer.
You’ll get a story. Maybe a passionate speech. Definitely a food recommendation. And, if you’re lucky, someone will tell you where to find the best bunny chow.
So when we asked our East Coast Breakfast audience what makes KZN the best, they had plenty to say.

It starts with the soul
For one listener, KZN simply has “soul.”
And perhaps that’s because so many different cultures meet here.
Zulu culture, Indian culture and white South African culture have blended over generations, creating something that feels distinctly KZN.
It’s in our languages, our music, our food, our celebrations, our humour and even the way we greet each other.
One listener described KZN as a place where a church and a mosque can stand next to each other, with people respecting each other’s religions.
That sense of coexistence is part of what makes the province feel like home.
And then… there’s the weather.
Let’s be honest. KZN doesn’t exactly have the harshest winter.
One listener summed it up perfectly:
“The gorgeous winter climate! (ie. No winter!)”
Then there’s that warm Indian Ocean sitting right on our doorstep.
Beach days, swimming, sundowners and that particular feeling of walking outside in winter and realising you don’t actually need three jackets.

We have the beach, the bush AND the Berg
Why choose one type of getaway when KZN decided to give us all three?
As one listener put it:
“We have bush, beach and Berg. Spoilt for choice.”
You can spend the morning watching waves roll onto the coastline, head inland for a completely different landscape and still have the Drakensberg waiting for you.
KZN really said: pick your adventure.
The food deserves its own article
If there’s one thing KZN doesn’t play about, it’s food.
Our audience mentioned the food, the vibe, the mixed culture and the people.
And then there was the bunny chow.
KZN is, according to one listener, “basically the spiritual home of the bunny chow.”
Honestly, we’re not here to start an argument. We’re just saying… they’re not wrong.
And then someone brought up one of the greatest displays of trust known to humanity:
“They offer you the last piece of chicken on the braai AND the gizzards.”
That’s not just hospitality.
That’s love, sacrifice and trust all in one bite.

It’s the people
Several listeners came back to the same thing: the people.
Friendly. Chilled. Welcoming.
There’s an ease to KZN that can be difficult to explain until you’ve experienced it.
Maybe it’s the way strangers can end up chatting like they’ve known each other for years.
Maybe it’s the humour. Maybe it’s the slang. Or maybe it’s just that KZN people have a particular way of making you feel like you’ve arrived somewhere familiar.
And speaking of humour…
Nobody does KZN humour quite like KZN
Every province has its own personality.
But KZN has its own slang, jokes, expressions and energy.
Sometimes you don’t even need to explain the joke.
If you’re from here, you just get it.
That shared language creates its own kind of community; one that can make a simple conversation about traffic, food or the weather turn into a full-blown comedy routine.
There’s resilience here too
For one listener, what makes KZN special goes deeper than beaches and good weather.
They pointed to the resilience of the Zulu nation.
It’s a reminder that KZN’s identity isn’t just about what the province looks like.
It’s also about its people, its history, its strength and the ability to keep moving forward through difficult times.
That’s part of the soul people feel when they talk about this place.
And then there’s East Coast Radio…
We couldn’t ask KZN what makes KZN the best without getting a few mentions of ourselves.
One listener simply said:
“East Coast Radio definitely.”
Another said:
“The food. The vibe. The mixed culture. The people. And East Coast Radio.”
And perhaps the boldest declaration came from someone who said:
“East Coast Radio is KZN.”
We’re not going to argue with the people.
Especially when they’re this complimentary.

KZN isn’t perfect, but maybe that’s not the point.
It’s ours, and if you live here, you probably know exactly what that feels like.
