Call this weekend's weather on the coast 'Eben' - because it's going to be rough
Updated | By East Coast Breakfast
Forget the beach plans. Fishing expert Vinesh Soogreem has a blunt forecast for this weekend: rough weather, choppy water, and heavy winds that will turn your umbrella inside out.
This is not a beach weekend. A strong south-westerly system is hitting the East Coast with temperatures dropping fast, light showers, partly cloudy cover, and winds that will turn your umbrella inside out before you reach the promenade.
The ocean is a giant washing machine with a heavy spin cycle. Three-meter waves, choppy water, heavy drift, and brown spray at 30 knots make it dangerous for swimming and unsuitable for water activities. Saturday won't be better either.
By Sunday the winds will calm and the sun may make an appearance, but the water will still be properly turned up. It's a sit-on-the-beach-with-a-coffee day, not a swimming day.
What to do instead
Swap your towel for a throw blanket. Trade ice-cold sundowners for pots of tea. Stream a series. Stay warm and stay dry. If you're interested in beach photography, the wild waves on a windy day can be spectacular, but expect dramatic conditions.
