The hashtag #ThingsBetterThanJasonDerulo was one of the biggest trending topics on Twitter at the weekend. That’s thanks to Jason Derulo’s poor choice of words.
He was the one everyone was waiting for. Guests at the glitzy ANN7 South African of the Year Awards on Saturday were thrilled when the American singer and dancer took to the stage.
The event celebrates South Africans who’ve been making a difference in exciting categories like sport, business, conservation and others. So it was a proud moment for our diverse and multi-cultural country.
What we got was this. Jason during his gig, asked the audience,"Y'all speak English right?"
Condescending? Somewhat ignorant? Sounds like it right? Stars at the event tweeted immediately quoting the singer and expressing their surprise at his statement.
Then came the hashtag #ThingsBetterThanJasonDerulo. It intended to make fun of Jason’s remarks by highlighting the worst possible things in the world that – in this case - are better than him.
