Winter school holidays are in full swing, and if you’ve already heard “I’m bored!” more times than you’ve had cups of coffee this week, you’re definitely not alone.

That’s why East Coast Breakfast asked KZN parents to share their favourite budget-friendly ways to keep the kids entertained.

Turn your backyard into a campsite

For the outdoorsy families, Sauri suggested transforming your backyard into a campsite.

Pitch a tent, roast marshmallows over the braai, and make hot dog rolls under the stars.

It’s all the fun of camping without the long drive home.

Teach them life skills

Looking to sneak a little learning into the holidays? Alisha suggested using the extra time to teach practical life skills.

Show your kids how to change a tyre, use the washing machine, build something with their hands, read a book, watch an educational documentary or even volunteer in the community.

School holidays can be about growing confidence as much as having fun.

Explore Cumec Park

Need to get everyone out of the house? Head to Cumec Park in Hillcrest.

The park offers plenty of open space for kids to run around, walking and cycling trails, picnic spots and a chance for the whole family to enjoy the fresh air.

Pack a picnic at Durban Botanic Gardens

If you’re after a peaceful family outing, the Durban Botanic Gardens is always a winner.

Step into a world of illusions

Looking for something a little different? The Museum of Illusions at Gateway Theatre of Shopping is one of Durban’s newest family attractions and a guaranteed hit with curious kids (and adults!).

Karen had perhaps the simplest advice of all: let kids be bored.
