Survival Guide: Could you survive 10 days living in a car?

If you had a chance to win a million-rand prize for living in a car for 10 days, could you survive? Here's a guide to help you make it out alive

So, if you’ve been listening to East Coast Radio, you’ll know that GoldRush just said: “Let’s test your sanity… and reward you with a car.”

If not, here’s the deal. From 1 May to 10 May at Hillcrest Corner, 10 finalists will spend 10 days living inside a car, and the last man standing will win a BMW M240i!!

However, you literally have to LIVE in this car for 10 days. Eating. Sleeping. Working. Competing. Surviving.

Quit, break the rules, or lose a challenge… and you’re OUT.

So… we decided to help you out by preparing you. This is your five-step survival guide to winning this epic ride!

How to survive 10 days without losing your mind

1. Fake a routine

No routine = chaos.

Create a simple flow:

  • Morning stretch (in the car... obviously)
  • Snack times
  • Mental check-ins

It tricks your brain into thinking you’re in control… even when you’re clearly not.

2. Master the art of car naps

You’re not getting perfect sleep. Accept it. Do this instead:

  • Recline slightly (not flat, not stiff)
  • Use clothes as pillows
  • Take short naps when you can

The aim is to survive, not be comfortable.

3. Snack like a strategist

Bad food equals bad decisions.

Stick to protein (nuts and biltong), light, clean snacks and loads of water (your secret weapon)

Avoid anything that turns your seat into a crime scene. Sadly, this car doesn’t come with a lavatory.

4. Control your emotions (no, seriously...)

By day three, everything will annoy you.

Too hot? Problem. Too cold? Problem. Too quiet? Problem. Loneliness? Also, a problem. Your own thoughts? Major problem.

The winners don’t snap. They stay calm longer than everyone else.

5. Beat boredom before it beats you

Boredom is the real elimination round.

Keep your brain busy with mental games, actual games, counting challenges, calls to friends and family and even introspection.

Even if you don’t make it to day 10, at least you’ll have your life in order again. Remember, once your mind checks out, you’re also out.

Sadly, if it were easy to get a R1 million sports car, everyone would have one. However, it’s not.

So, this isn’t about comfort. It’s about who quits last.

You will be tired. You will be annoyed. You will question your life choices around day five. Yet, if you outlast everyone else, you drive away in a brand-new BMW.

So… are you built for this?

Do you think you could last 10 days in a car?

Well - prove it by clicking here to enter by April 16! Saying “I could do that” is easy, but actually doing it?

That’s a whole different personality.
