We’ve all had those mornings when the alarm goes off and the last thing we want to do is get out of bed and head to work.

But while most of us stick to the classic “I’m not feeling well” excuse, some employees are clearly operating on a completely different level of creativity.

We asked bosses and employers to share the most outrageous excuses their employees have given them for missing work, and honestly, some of these deserve a day off just for the imagination involved.

Here are 10 of the most creative excuses employees have used to explain why they couldn’t make it to work.

1. “My dog ran away, so I had to go find it.”

Fair enough. Finding your dog is important. But we’re hoping they at least brought photographic evidence of the Great Dog Hunt.

2. “My church started late, so I won’t make it to work tonight.”

A late church service apparently meant an even later arrival at work. Priorities.

3. “My mom threw me out of my house so she could live there freely.”

This employee explained that their mother had kicked them out so she could enjoy the house herself, leaving them with their elders to try and raise money for a new place to stay. At that point, work was probably the least of their problems.

4. “My mother-in-law is admitted to hospital. I think she might die tonight, so tomorrow I will need to bath her.”

This one escalated quickly. Not only was the employee worried about their mother-in-law’s health, but they were already planning their responsibilities for the following day.

We’re just wondering how they managed to predict the entire situation in advance.

5. “I was drugged and kidnapped last night.”

There really isn’t much you can say after that. It’s certainly one way to explain why you didn’t make it to work.

6. “I forgot it was Monday.”

Honestly… this might be the most relatable excuse on the list. Monday has caught all of us off guard at some point. But forgetting that Monday exists entirely? That’s impressive.

7. “My roof flew away and I had to go find it.”

The roof didn’t just blow off. They had to go looking for it. And apparently, it took 11 days to find. At that stage, we’d have questions too.

8. “I had a flat tyre” - except there was one tiny problem.

One employee who uses public transport arrived late and explained that they had suffered a flat tyre and spent an hour trying to change it.

The problem? They don’t even own a wheelbarrow. That excuse didn’t just have a flat tyre. It had a full-blown puncture.

9. “My child had a head injury and now I have to reintroduce her to our ancestors.”

This one definitely took an unexpected turn. The employee couldn’t come to work because their child had suffered a head injury and they needed to perform what they described as reintroducing her to their ancestors.

You can’t accuse them of not thinking outside the box.

10. “I have no bus fare. I drank all my money.”

At least this employee was honest. No elaborate story. No mysterious medical emergency. No runaway roof. Just: “I drank all my money.”

And honestly, the brutal honesty almost deserves respect.
