How to win a bet
Updated | By East Coast Breakfast
Here are a few dos and don’ts to remember before saying, “You’re on!”
Darren Maule won a bet, and now he’s a receptionist. Well, not permanently.
However, after confidently backing the Springboks during Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry against the All Blacks, Darren found himself on the winning side of a bet; only to discover that winning came with a rather unexpected consequence.
Instead of simply celebrating his victory and enjoying some well-earned bragging rights, Darren had to swap his microphone for a telephone and spend a day working as a receptionist.
Which raises an important question: Did Darren really win?
Technically, yes. However his unusual victory is proof that winning a bet isn’t always as straightforward as being right.
Sometimes you lose and have to face the consequences, and sometimes you win… and somehow still end up with a new job.
So, before you confidently say, “You’re on!” and put your reputation, dignity or free time on the line, here are a few dos and don’ts to help make sure your next victory actually feels like one.

DO: Know what you’re betting on
Before saying, “You’re on!”, make sure everyone agrees on the prediction.
What exactly needs to happen for someone to win?
A vague bet can quickly turn into a debate where everyone suddenly remembers the original conversation differently.
If you’re going to put your pride on the line, it’s probably worth knowing exactly why.
DO: Know what winning actually means
Most people think carefully about what will happen if they lose a bet.
But what happens if you win? You might assume the answer is simple: you celebrate, enjoy the bragging rights and move on with your life.
Apparently not always. Darren’s victory is proof that winning can sometimes come with its own unexpected consequences.
So, before making a bet, make sure you understand both possible outcomes.
Winning should ideally feel like winning.
DON’T: Leave room for surprises
“We’ll decide later.” Sounds harmless enough. It rarely is.
Leaving parts of a bet open to interpretation can be risky, particularly when the other people involved suddenly become very creative after the result.
Agree on the important details before the bet begins.
Future you will be grateful.
DO: Keep the stakes fun
The best bets create a story everyone can laugh about afterwards.
A funny challenge. Buying someone coffee. Wearing something ridiculous for a day.
The stakes should make the bet more entertaining, not create genuine problems.
A good bet should leave you with bragging rights and a funny story, not financial problems or awkward conversations with your boss.
DON’T: Bet what you can’t afford to lose
This applies to money, valuables and anything else that would genuinely cause a problem if you had to give it up.
Confidence can be a dangerous thing.
Before agreeing to anything, ask yourself: “If I lose, am I genuinely prepared to follow through?”
If the answer is no, step away slowly. There will always be another bet.

DO: Keep a record
No, you don’t need a lawyer. A WhatsApp message will usually do.
Having the agreement written down can save plenty of arguments later, especially when someone suddenly develops selective memory after losing.
Because once the result is in, phrases such as “That’s not what we agreed” have a funny way of appearing.
Receipts are your friend.
DON’T: Be a bad winner
Winning feels good. Enjoy it. Celebrate. Take your moment.
But there is a difference between celebrating and becoming the most annoying person in the group chat.
A little bragging is part of the experience. Sending reminders every day for the next six months may be slightly excessive.
Maybe.
DO: Honour the bet
Whether you win or lose, stick to what was agreed. That’s the whole point.
A bet isn’t much fun if people start changing the rules or looking for loopholes once they know the result.
Win with grace. Lose with dignity. Or, in some cases, win and still prepare for your first day at reception.
DON’T: Let one win make you overconfident
This is where things can get dangerous.
You’ve just won. You were right. Your confidence is sky-high. Suddenly, you’re convinced that you can predict everything.
That is usually the moment to take a break.
Enjoy your victory before immediately putting your dignity on the line again.

The Golden Rule: Make sure winning feels like winning
Darren Maule’s experience proves that sometimes winning a bet can come with consequences you didn’t quite expect.
He came out on the winning side and somehow still ended up preparing to become a receptionist for a day.
The lesson? Know what you’re getting into, keep it fun and make sure you’re happy with the outcome - whichever way things go.
Because there’s nothing worse than celebrating your victory…
Only to discover that you’ve accidentally agreed to start a new job.
