'Fast & Furious' star Sung Kang heading to Durban
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
Durbanites are celebrating after news dropped that actor and car enthusiast Sung Kang will be heading to our shores.
'The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift' star is set to make an appearance at the 2026 Gas Motorshow taking place at Durban's Suncoast Casino in June.
"The legend himself, Sung Kang, is coming to Durban for the ultimate automotive experience," organisers said.
Kang says he can't wait to touch down in Mzansi.
"What's up, South Africa. Sung Kang here. I am going to be in Durban on June 13th and 14th at the Gas Motorshow. I hope I will see you there, and it's going to be a fun few days of a lot of car culture, and I get to see South Africa's car community," he said in a video message shared on Instagram.
Durbanites are beside themselves with excitement. "Are u gonna do that drift u did in Tokyo Drift?" one fan asked.
Another person commented: "Finally, someone with common sense is coming to the warmest place to be. I’ll certainly pull up."
Johannesburg and Cape Town peeps were less than impressed, questioning why Durban was chosen over their cities.
"For all those who are asking why Durban, it's because Durban Rocks."
Sung Kang 'Drifter' movie
Kang is not coming to Durban empty-handed. He is bringing the Lola 2.
The upgraded 1986 Toyota AE86 Corolla has an LS3 V8-powered engine with custom headers. It features in Kang's upcoming movie, 'Drifter'.
He directs and stars in the film, set for release in 2026. Kang also wrote the script. A synopsis of the movie reads:
"In a forgotten desert town, a solitary racetrack janitor with a gift for drifting is haunted by his tragic past. Given a single chance to compete at a pro drifting event, he discovers his raw talent is useless without the one thing he's always avoided: connection with others. Under a hardened mentor, he must learn to trust his found family and transform his untamed, lonely art into a dangerous dance of partnership, or be consumed and controlled by the past he's desperate to escape."
Two other Lola cars are also used in the film.
Kang is known for his role as Han Lue in the 'Fast & Furious" franchise.
Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jordana Brewster starred in the first film, which premiered in 2001.
Ten more films from the 'Fast Saga' have dropped since then, with stars such as Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Eva Mendes, Gal Gadot, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, John Cena, and Jason Statham joining the franchise.
Nathalie Emmanuel, Jason Momoa and South African-born actress Charlize Theron also featured.
'Fast Forever', the 11th and final movie, is expected to debut in cinemas in March 2028. Kang will return alongside several other popular characters.
The release date for his 'Drifter' movie has not been announced yet.
